ヘンリー・ミラーの尊敬する作家であるホイットマンの対訳詩集。
岩波文庫版は翻訳と原文とが並んでいるため、理解の助けになる。わたしは１０年以上前に読んだので、意味の把握に難があり、文字通り雑然としたメモしか残っていない。しかし、読んでいる最中は感心していた。
この作者については、いずれまた読む必要がある。
「Whatever satisfies the soul is truth」
なんであれ魂を満足させるものが真理である。
彼は独学で、また生涯独身だった。彼は普遍性を追求し、ミラーによれば生の驚異をたたえた。
日本人についての言葉が残っている。
「Over the Western sea hither from niphon come,courteous,the swart-cheek'd envoys,leaning back in their open barouches,bareheaded,impassive,ride today through Manhattan. Libertad!（自由なくによ！）」
「Life,life is the tillage,and Death is the harvest according.いのち、生命は耕作で、死はそれに応じた収穫だ」。
天上の館、heavenly mansion。
人間の自我、固有のもの、もっとも最小の人間の単位、それらをホイットマンは称える。

「treating of him as he is in himself in his own rights」、「Pressing the pulse of the life that has seldom exhibited itself」
ホイットマンの詩の特徴の１つは、「列挙して歌いあげていく手法」である。
I hear America singing
「きみの（誇り高い図書館）ぎっしりつまった本棚のどこを探してもかけているが、いちばん必要とされているものを、わたしが持っていくからだ」
「わたしの本の言葉のかずかず、それは無だ、その本の趣旨こそがすべてだ」
本の趣旨は流れてたどり着くもの、「表面の言葉だけにとらわれるな」。
To you
――And why should I not speak to you?
A child said "what is the grass?"。
草の葉からの連想、彼の思想の渓流、流れ、放出。希望に満ちた緑の素材で織りなされた、わたしの気質の旗にちがいない（it must be the flag of my disposition,out of hopeful green stuff woven）。
――And now it seems to me the beautiful uncut hair of graves.
――All goes onward and outward,nothing collapses, And to die is different from what any one supposed,and luckier」
fresh kill'd game「捕えたばかりの獲物」、song of myselfの一節……
次々と異なる場所にあらわれる「わたし」。ホイットマンをさまざまな人間が訪れる。漁師、逃亡中の奴隷など。
――In me the caresser of life wherever moving, backward as well as forward sluing, To niches aside and junior bending, not a person or object missing, Absorbing all to myself and for this song.
「くびきや鎖をがちゃがちゃと鳴らし、葉陰にたちどまる牛たちよ、おまえの目で表現しているのは何なのだ？ それはわたしの全生涯で読んできた、すべての印刷物以上のように、わたしに思える」。
And do not call the tortoise unworthy because shi is not something else.
